Aion 2's much-awaited worldwide release is days away, following its release in Korea and Taiwan roughly a year ago. Despite this, the MMO has soared - high up Steam's most played game chart.

Aion 2 has finally arrived and is proving quite popular as this month's shiny new MMO, with hundreds of thousands of players enjoying its stunning character creator and visuals – despite developer and publisher NC's use of generative AI, that is.

In case you've missed it, Aion 2 is here as the ambitious sequel to Korean MMO Aion: The Tower of Eternity – a 2008 gem that's maintained a dedicated fanbase despite its age.

It's got quite an active community already, too, hitting nearly 400,000 players on its first official day (it was available pre-release to folks who paid, after all), according to SteamDB figures. A solid 397,905 players, to be precise… which is no small feat.

The official Most Played charts on Steam mark it as the fourth most popular game currently, too, with the MMO coming in ahead of Apex Legends and Wardogs. It's also apparently the third most downloaded title on Valve's platform as well, so, yeah.

It's clearly seeing a good bit of activity. As for what players are thinking of Aion 2 so far… well, that's a little bit more complicated. Feedback so far isn't exactly positive.

In fact, the game currently has a \"Mixed\" rating on Steam, with many reviews discussing its pay-to-win features.

One dubs it an \"extremely predatory monetization\" system and says Aion 2 is \"the complete opposite of what a good MMO means.\" Others complain that it's got \"slop\" vibes, perhaps alluding to NC's use of generative AI during development.

There is a disclaimer outlining as much on the page. \"Some in-game assets were created with the assistance of AI tools,\" it reads. \"Arcana card designs and some icons use AI-generated assets.\"

Not everyone is a fan of gen AI, of course, but again, that doesn't seem to be the topic dominating players' feedback. And as someone who gave the game a go, I can definitely understand why – pay-to-win is a big concern in the MMO community, and Aion has historically been no stranger to it.

There is plenty of positive discussion surrounding the sequel as well, however, and I'd be lying if I said there weren't good qualities myself. The character creation is wonderful, and the world is gorgeous. Plus, it's clearly plenty populated.

Aion 2, a free-to-play MMO action RPG, is going viral for its character creation settings — more specifically, for how busty you can make your female character.

Some players sink hours into character creators before they start an RPG. They’re almost a game all on their own, and players have been known to spend inordinate amounts of time creating all manner of monstrosities using the various sliders available to them. (Check out the absolutely bonkers creations players made when Street Fighter 6 launched, for example.)

However, Aion 2’s character creator is providing customization of a different type, and it has sparked quite a debate within the broader gaming community.

If you’re on gaming twitter at all, you’ve probably seen gameplay footage of someone using Aion 2’s character creator — or, to put it bluntly, abusing the bust size slider to increase the size of their character’s bosom. You know, for science.

This viral clip has stirred up a conversation around the types of bodies we see in video games. Some players have noticed that there doesn’t seem to be an option to decrease your character’s breast size from the default setting, leading to claims of ‘small chest erasure’ and the game’s developers catering only to a specific type of preference.

“I'm sorry, but if you really ‘love boobs,’ you'd be okay with small boobs existing too, but [the] minimum size is [a] C cup?” one user wrote in a viral quote-tweet on X.

“I'm irritated that things like this imply only big boobs are desirable because that can give young women body image issues,” they continued in a follow-up post.

Even Japanese players have noticed the disparity, with one writing, “The minimum isn't minimum at all! Even the minimum is too damn big!”

“The minimum is way too big, isn’t it?” another asked.

However, the broader reaction to this particular viral clip from Aion 2’s character creator has been humor; both English-speaking and Japanese players have found the bust customization feature quite funny, sparking endless jokes about how they’ll need a few hours before they “actually start the game.”

Whatever the case may be, it’s at least brought some eyes to Aion 2. Released on October 5 from South Korean developers NC, the game is set in a conflict between two warring nations. Thus far, it’s received mixed reviews on Steam, though it’s still early days and MMOs often take time for players to get settled in.

Aion 2 has arrived, and there's a lot to like if you've got a hankering for a new MMO: meaty combat, challenging boss encounters, a seemingly endless grind for completionists, and, yes, it's free to play. However, one of my very favourite things about it is the character creator.
